The Weirton Christmas Parade has been cancelled due to increased COVID 19 numbers in Hancock County. The parade had been slated for November 28.
“Under the guidance of the Hancock County Health Department and out of concern for the health and safety of residents, we regretfully announce the parade has been cancelled,” read a parade update issued by the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce, parade sponsors.
Jackie Huff, administrator of the Hancock County Health Department, said the County had gone from green to yellow to gold status of today (November 12). Huff said the increase in those testing positive for the virus indicates the virus is community spread. That upsurge is attributed to large gatherings, lack of social distancing and lack of adherence to mask regulations according to Huff.
Hancock County has seen large increases in positive COVID tests in the past two weeks. According the Dept. of Health & Human Resources, Hancock was reported at 346 cases – November 12; 232 cases– November 3; and 213 cases – October 25.
The Weirton Area Chamber will sponsor a Light Up Night on Saturday, December 19. Those interested in being a sponsor should contact the Chamber.
