- The city of New Cumberland recently began a program to honor the men and women of their town who have served or are currently serving in all branches of the military. Interested relatives of veterans and current military are asked to pick up a form and fill it out if they would like to purchase a banner. These forms can be picked up at the New Cumberland City Building, the Swaney Library, and the New Cumberland VFW. For anyone who lives out of town and can’t pick up a form, one can be mailed to you. Send a request to “City of New Cumberland/Military Banners” PO Box 505, New Cumberland, WV, 26047 if you would like a form sent to you. The one-time cost to purchase a banner for a service man or woman is $125.00. This includes a 24” by 36” two-sided banner and the necessary hardware to install the banner on a telephone pole somewhere in town. The banner is a fitting way to honor all those who have served and to recognize their sacrifice. On the face of the banner will be the service person’s name, rank, years served, and any commendations that he or she might have earned. To purchase a banner, you must include a copy of the service person’s DD-214 form. If you don’t have one, they are often available from the Hancock County Court House. For questions about the banner program, please send your inquiry to [email protected] or call George Hines at 304-670-7092.
