SWANEY MEMORIAL LIBRARY

We had such a great time at our annual Day at Hogwarts. All of the kids chatted with Hagrid; were welcomed by Professor Dumbledore; sorted into houses; feasted together in the great dining hall; made potions and wands; hunted horcruxes; visited Honeydukes Sweets shop; and played quidditch, where the golden snitch was captured. You can visit Swaney Memorial Library’s Facebook page and watch the quidditch video. We would like to thank everyone who volunteered and made this such a success. A big thank you to all of the families who came and had so much fun with us!

Swaney Memorial Library had a great turnout for Carol Hall’s book signing. There was a lot of laughter and conversation at the event. We can’t wait to find out what happens next in the sequel to “A King’s Ransom,” and eagerly await its publication. You can buy all of Carol’s books directly from her through her Facebook page. We also have all of her books available for check out.

It’s my favorite time of the year at the library – No Fines November! If you have an overdue book, audiobook, or DVD, just bring it back to the library and your fine will be waived regardless of how overdue it is. If you come before or after operating hours, you can drop the items in the book drop on the front porch. This is a win-win for everyone. You don’t have to pay a fine, we get our materials back, and other people can check them out!

If you haven’t already, it’s not too late to register your kids for our “Choose Your Own Adventure” book club for children in grades 3rd through 8th. It starts next Tuesday, November 9th, and will meet the second Tuesday of every month from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. There is a one-time $5 fee for this program to help buy books and craft supplies. We are so excited about this club and hope to have a lot of kids sign up. It’s going to be a new adventure every month!

The Read With Rover programs for November will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 13th and 6 p.m., Wednesday, November 17th. Read With Rover programs help reluctant readers gain confidence by reading aloud to a nonjudgmental audience of therapy dogs. Kids of all ages love reading to the dogs so call and register yours today!

Swaney Memorial Library will be closed for Veteran’s Day, Thursday, November 11th, and for Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 25th and Friday, November 26th. We will reopen at 10 a.m. Monday, November 29th. We thank all veterans for their service and wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!

Throughout the month of December, you can visit the library and vote on your favorite Christmas tree for $1 a ticket or six tickets for $5. The trees are decorated by local churches and organizations, adding to the festivities and making the library look beautiful. Voting will end on December 30th, and the organization or church with the most votes wins the money, with half going to benefit the library.

We will hold a Paint & Snack for adults at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, December 3rd, and one for children at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 4th. The cost is $35 for the adult’s and $25 for children’s. Please call 304-564-3471 to register for these events. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Deborah Smith will be the instructor for these sessions and they are open to all ages.

This just in:  Jack Reacher’s at it again in Lee Child’s latest, Better Off Dead; find out what Lacy Stoltz is up to in The Judge’s List, book two of the Whistler series by John Grisham; and Debbie Macomber’s getting us ready for the holidays with her newest novel, Dear Santa. We’ve also had a large donation of Amish books, so make sure you check those out as well. It’s the perfect time of year to cozy up with a good book!
