SWANEY MEMORIAL LIBRARY

It’s my favorite time of the year at the library – No Fines November! If you have an overdue book, audiobook, or DVD, just bring it back to the library and your fine will be waived regardless of how overdue it is. If you come before or after operating hours, you can drop the items in the book drop on the front porch. We’ll still waive the fine and other people can check out the wonderful items you had. It’s also the time of year when we start charging $3 per bag for the book sale. We’ve had A LOT of donations, so stop in and see what we have. Then leave with an entire bag of books for just $3!

Visit the library to save a turkey and gobble up books before we close for Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 25th and Friday, November 26th. Our hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays; 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesdays; and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays. We regret to inform you that the library will open late on Wednesday, December 1st, probably not until 1 p.m.

Swaney Memorial Library’s Read With Rover program will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 27th. Read With Rover programs help reluctant readers gain confidence by reading aloud to a nonjudgmental audience of therapy dogs. Kids of all ages love reading to the dogs so call and register your children today!

Throughout the month of December, you can visit the library and vote on your favorite Christmas tree for $1 a ticket or six tickets for $5. The trees are decorated by local churches and organizations, adding to the festivities and making the library look beautiful. Voting will end on December 30th, and the organization or church with the most votes wins the money, with half going to benefit the library.

We will hold a Paint & Snack for adults at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, December 3rd, and one for children at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 4th. The cost is $35 for the adult’s and $25 for children’s. Please call 304-564-3471 to register for these events. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Deborah Smith will be the instructor for these sessions and they are open to all ages.

Guess who’s coming to town? That’s right! Santa Claus! Join us at the New Cumberland VFW at 9 a.m., Saturday, December 4th for our annual Breakfast with Santa. Enjoy a delicious Breakfast prepared by the VFW, followed by stories, and then a visit from the big man himself. The cost is $3 per person for the buffet or the donation of a pair of gloves or mittens.

If you haven’t already, it’s not too late to register your kids for our “Choose Your Own Adventure” book club for children in grades 3rd through 8th. We meet the second Tuesday of every month, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. There is a one-time $5 fee for this program to help buy books and craft supplies. We are so excited about this club and hope to have a lot of kids sign up. Upon completion of this program, each child will receive a free Choose Your Own Adventure book. It’s going to be a new adventure every month!

This just in:  Janet Evanovich’s latest Stephanie Plum novel, Game On:  Tempting Twenty-Eight, is in but won’t stay on the shelf long so hurry in to check it out. It’s the perfect time of year to cozy up with a good book!
