ZOELLERS NAMED LIONS SCHOLAR

Makayla Zoellers, 17, is the January recipient of the Lion’s Club Scholar of the Month. She is the daughter of Grover and Julie Zoellers of New Cumberland.

A senior at Oak Glen High School, Makayla holds a 4.04 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society, Prom Committee, Culture Club, and a 4-year member of the OVAC All-Academic Team.

Her athletic accomplishments are numerous.  A 4-year letterman in softball, she was a member of the 2021 OVAC Champion team and 2021 State Runner-up team, being named to the All-State Honorable Mention team.  She is also a 2-year letterman in volleyball and part of the 2019 undefeated, OVAC Champion and State Champion volleyball team.  In both 2020 and 2021 seasons, her volleyball team was Sectional and Regional Champions, finishing top 4 in the State Tournament.  In 2021 she was selected to participate in the North-South All-Star Volleyball game in Beckley, West Virginia.

Along with her athletics, Makayla’s artistic abilities were recognized when her art portraits were selected for the West Virginia Congressional Art Competition in Charleston in the spring of 2021.

Even though Makayla is very active in sports and academics, she finds time to pursue her passion for animals and volunteers’ countless hours at the Oglebay Good Zoo.  Makayla has also participated in the Zoo Teen summer program in 2017 and 2018 at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium.

After graduation, Makayla plans to attend West Liberty University in the fall of 2022 majoring in Zoo Science.
