KNOW THE CANDIDATE: CLERK OF THE COUNTY COURT Valerie Truax, Weirton

Age: 61

1)WHAT ARE THE DUTIES OF THE CLERK OF THE COUNTY COMMISSION?

The County Clerk has two main functions: first to act as the Clerk of the County Commission and secondly to serve as the Chief Election Officer for the county. As the “Official Record Keeper” the clerk records a variety of documents including, probate, deeds, mortgages, marriages, deaths and makes them accessible for public use. As the “Chief Election Officer” the County Clerk is responsible for preparing all the materials needed for elections, including the poll workers, ballots, and poll books. The office is also responsible for registering and maintaining voter registrations and safeguarding all voting materials.

2)WHAT EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION DO YOU HAVE THAT YOU BELIEVE QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION?

I have served in the County Clerk’s Office for 16 years and for the last 7 years as Chief Deputy. I understand what goes into running the Clerk’s office and have stood in for current Clerk George Foley as needed. I have been the secretary at the County Commission meetings and worked with the Election Office to help keep the voting processes running smoothly.  Throughout my time as chief deputy I have strived to make our office more accessible to the public by implementing our new online services.

3)ARE THERE ANY UPDATES/EFFICIENCIES YOU WILL PURSUE IN THE CLERK’S OFFICE OR ELECTION OFFICE IF ELECTED?

My goals as Clerk are to continue to make more of our documents available online, in such, I intend to scan more of our older documents so that researchers can continue to search our records without having to come to the office to finish a title search, and to make this more accessible to the public at home. I also would like to make our in-office services available with payment by credit or debit card. Another of my goals is to make a veteran ID card available to all Hancock County veterans who put their DD214 on record and for them to receive an ID card free of charge. I will work diligently to keep our office moving forward with new advancements. I would appreciate your vote on May 10th.
