Two new assistant principals were named at Monday’s meeting of the Hancock County Board of Education. Scott Wiley, a teacher at Oak Glen High School, was named Assistant Principal at Oak Glen Middle School while Edson “Ted” Arneault, teacher and former head coach at Oak Glen High, was named Assistant Principal at Weirton Elementary. Board member Ed Fields asked Superintendent Dawn Petrovich how many applicants there had been for each post and Petrovich said there had been four for Weirton Elementary and three for Oak Glen Middle.
Oak Glen High School students Tessa Kefer and Savannah Dulaney were recognized for honors in art and music. Keffer received the Governor’s Honors Award in Art and Dulaney received the Governor’s Honor Award in Music. Both students attended the Governor’s Honors Academy in their respective areas and reported the experience was great. Dulaney said the programs needed to be advertised more so that students could be aware of the program.
A progress report on the softball and baseball fields at Weir High School. Petrovich said two bids had been received on the vertical structures for the two field. Package 1 from GRAE Con was $167,100.00 and Package 2 was $137,200.00 Package 1 from Massara was $240,000.00 and Package 2 was $198.000.00. The Board rejected the bids opting to instead perform the work internally after Petrovich said the bids came in way too high and the work could be performed for half the costs.
In other business, the Board:
**Approved a memorandums of understanding between the Weirton Elementary School and TIES (Trauma Informed Elementary School) for the upcoming year;
**Entered into contractual agreements with The Childrens Academy, Weirton Heights Daycare Classroom !, Northern Panhandle Head Start at Newell Center, Northern Panhandle Head Start at Pipinos Center 1 and Northern Panhandle Head Start at Pipinos Center 3 to provide WV Universal Pre-K Classrooms and per WV Policy 2424 for the 22-23 school year;
**Approved the assignment of Karen Peterson, Multi-Categorical/Autism, Weirton Elementary;
**Named Patrick McGillian a volunteer (unpaid) assistant wrestling coach at Oak Glen Middle;
**Approved substitutes Jenna Butcher, substitute aide; Lisa Converse, custodian; and Haley Richards, aide;
**Transferred Amber Phillips from substitute aide, countywide, to supervisory aide II-IV AM, Weirton Elementary; Christina Smith from substitute custodian to custodian II, Weir High; Cynthia Parrish from custodian II, Oak Glen Middle, to custodian II, Allison Elementary, and Keara Kush, supervisory aide II/AM, Weir Middle, to supervisory aide II/AM, Weirton Elementary;
**Accepted the resignation of Rebecca Froschier as LPN/Supervisory Aide;
**Held discussion regarding the change of meeting times from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and if that change had increased public participation. Board member Larry Shaw observed that issues caused people to attend meetings rather than the time the meeting was held. Consensus of the Board was that the later time was more convenient for those who work. The meetings will continue to be held at 6:30 p.m. with the Board revisiting the issue in January.
