OBITUARY: JOHN FINLEY

John Thomas Finley, 73 of Chester passed at the Weirton Medical Center on Sunday, October 16, 2022, with his loving family at his side. He had been diagnosed with cancer in February.

John was born in East Liverpool on October 9, 1949. He was the son of the late Robert E. and Josephine Smusz Finley. In addition to his parents, his grandparents, Robert and Ollie Finley, and Thomas and Sophie Smusz and his special friend Cindy preceded him in death.

He was a kindhearted and caring man and loved spending time with his family, especially his brother Bob and sister-in-law Bernadette, and his nieces Kristen and Amy and their families. John was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also loved to play cards with his family and friends. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, gardening, and coin collecting-his favorite pastime. He was a huge steeler and penguin fan. John was a proud veteran of the US Army, serving in the Vietnam conflict. John had many close friends at the Chester American Legion and Chester VFW where he was a longtime member. His favorite hobby was winemaking (Finley Brothers Cellars) with his best friend and brother, Bob.

John leaves his brother Bob (Bernadette) Finley of Weirton, his aunt Martha (Jim) Adams of Georgetown, PA., his nieces, Kristen (Micah) Sabota, and Ava, Peyton, and Carter, and his God Daughter, Amy (Matt) Taylor, and Brooklyn and Noah. Many special cousins, Jackie Hill, Earl (Lois) Jackson, Marcey (Dave) Brandon, Martin (Sherri) Mackall, Michelle (Anthony) Bernardi, Greg (Carol) Trimble, Toni (Dale) Shaffer, Susie (Jim) Anderson, Bert (Sharrie) Trimble, Jim (Katie) Adams, and his close friend, Bob Lee and dear neighbors, Gary, and Susan Stevens. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful staff (nurse’s aides, respiratory, and PT) at WMC Critical Care Unit, and Dr. Santebennur, Dr. Shoshi, Dr. Kelly, and Dr. Parihar for all their care and concern during this most difficult time. Thank you to Pastor Dave Fetter for all your prayers.

Friends may visit with the family at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester on Thursday, October 20, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 7:30 pm. Pastor Dirk Hall will Celebrate John’s life at 7:30 pm. Private interment will be at the Locust Hill Cemetery.
