Using attendance as an incentive to avoid taking final exams has adverse effects on the sick student, fellow students and educators. Ms. Patterson, Science teacher at Oak Glen High School, said the practice of using attendance as a way to get out of taking final exams has an adverse effect. Patterson noted that she has had students so sick they are throwing up and are not only putting themselves at risk, but infecting others.
During the COVID pandemic students were sent home with a cough, fever or even if they had had exposure to other students diagnosed with COVID. Patterson urged the Board to look at other ways to incentivize students.
