- Food and fun weren’t the only things on the agenda when the Hancock County CEOS held their annual picnic recently. They were joined by Sydney Brown, Oak Glen graduate and recipient of this year’s scholarship award, and presented her with a certificate along with a check for $500.The CEOS scholarship, which is offered each year, is available to any Hancock County senior, including those who are home schooled, with a qualifying GPA, and who writes the winning essay on a subject chosen by the CEOS. This year, the topic was “Community Improvement Through Volunteerism.”During her tenure at Oak Glen Sydney was a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Prom Committee, and Pep Club, and served as Class President for three years. She was also heavily involved in sports, lettering in softball, basketball, and soccer. Sydney has always sought volunteer opportunities, including community beautification projects, assisting at middle and elementary school functions, volunteering at the Hancock County Animal Shelter, and helping youth softball organizations and camps, including the Pittsburgh Spirit Softball and Swing City Sports Softball and Baseball camps.In her winning essay, Sydney stated, “Volunteering has brought me immense satisfaction over the years. I am so grateful to be able to give back to the communities that have supported me in so many ways,” and “I strongly believe that service to others comes in many forms, and even the smallest acts of kindness can be life-changing.”Sydney is the daughter of David and Sheryl Brown of Chester, will be attending Slippery Rock University this fal, where she will continue playing softball while pursuing a degree as a Physician Assistant.
