WVU MEETS WITH NEWELL RESIDENTS TO ASSIST WITH COMMUNITY IMPROVEMENT

The Moving Ahead Together Project: Northern Hancock met with community members from Newell on Saturday, October 7th, Present from WVU were two WVU faculty members, 9 WVU graduate students and WVU Extension Agent Zach White. Dr. Margaret Stout led the conversation with residents and then distributed surveys so that residents might convey their concerns and hopes for the community.

The results show that many community members love their community because it is home to them; where they socialize; where they make memories and recreate. They want WVU to help them find resources to help with dilapidated and rundown buildings; resources to help with the drug problems and different ways to get youth involved within the community. They also want to continue community beautification efforts and help create a better quality of life for all residents,

Following the meeting, White led the team on a tour of Newel, where they worked on creating an asset map of the community using GIS mapping systems. The team then met with more community members attending the Fiestaware Tent sale and listened to more of their ideas for improvement.
