The Hancock County Schools will benefit from the economic development set to take place in the County. While FORM Energy received a tax break to the State of West Virginia to lure them to locate in Hancock County, the company has presented the Hancock County Board of Education with a contract to contribute to the school system (if property taxes are assessed the school system gets 70% of the amount collected. The company is making a payment in lieu of taxes as a gesture of good will. The payment will go through the County Commission.
2023 Assessment Data for the State were distributed. Hancock County ranked 4th in the State in Assessment Data with Putnam being number 1; Monongalia – 2; Wood -3, Hancock – 4; Ohio -5th and Jackson, 6th. Hancock scored 48.2% of students being proficient in Math; 49.7% in English and 32.8 % in Science.
In other business, the Board:
**Accepted the resignation of Lucas Flaus, Science teacher at Weir High;
**Assigned Howard Icard, Auto-Tech instructor, JRDIV Career Center; Taylor Allison, Math teacher, Weir Middle and Marlene Fleming, substitute, Weir High;
**Coaching resignations were approved for Clayton Flowers, assistant football, Oak Glen High; and Lucas Flaus, head golf, Weir High;
**Coaching assignments were approved for Thomas Jackson (TJ) Haught – assistant boy’s Basketball – Weir Middle; Jaleu Man, assistant cheering, Oak Glen High;
**Transfers were approved for Melissa Wallace, substitute aide, countywide to supervisory aide II-IV/AM, K-4, Weirton Elementary; and Sarah Morris, substitute cook, countywide to cook III, Weir High;
**Anthony J. Fuscardo was approved as Custodian II, Weirton Elementary;
**Ronald Dunlap was transferred from Bus Operator #139 to Mechanic;
**Margie Apresos was transferred from Bus Operator #142 to Bus Operator #137;
**Andrea Mercer was granted a leave of absence;
**Jill Swan was approved 1 doc day;
**Permissison was granted for Oak Glen Middle student to travel to Charleston to participate in the WV All-State Middle School Band in Charleston;
**Permission was granted to take Oak Glen Middle School to take participating students to the WV All-State Children’s Chorus in Charleston.
The Board will meet again for it’s regular meeting February 12 at Weir High.
