TATE TO RECEIVE SPIRIT OF SCOUTING

Hugh Carl Tate, Jr. will receive the Spirit of Scouting award Sunday,  Feb. 4 at the Hall of Fame ceremony.  The event will be held at 1 p.m. at the Christian Church on Court St. in New Cumberland.  Dedicated to former Mayor and Eagle Scout, the late Jack Harris, the annual award is given to an individual who exemplifies the characteristics of scouting.

Tate was born November 27, 1987 at Weirton Medical Center.  He is the only son of Tina Tate and the late Hugh C. Tate, Sr.  He grew up on Third Avenue in New Cumberland with his two sisters, Amanda (Steve)McKinney and Jennifer (Brian) Cunningham.  One of Hugh’s favorite titles is Uncle and he is uncle to five nieces (Madelynn and Karesynn McKinney, Eva and Adelynna Pasquarelli and Emerie Cunningham and two nephews (Adriano Pasquarelli and Easton Cunningham.)

Hugh attended New Cumberland Elementary School, Oak Glen Middle in Chester and is a 2006 graduate of Oak Glen High School.  Hugh was a member of the National Honor Society, a 3-year letterman in baseball and was a completer of  the Criminal Justice program at the JDR Career Center.

After High School graduation,  Hugh attended West Liberty University until securing a position in 2008 with the New Cumberland Police Department,  Hugh attended the West Virginia State Police Academy in 2008.  He served the City of New Cumberland for a year unti joining the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department in December2008.  Hugh became a K9 Handler to his first canine, Dagoo, in 2016.  They served for six years together and Dagoo’s sudden passing due to health complications,    The Sheriffs’ Office along with Hugh’s family and  the community  worked to raise funds to keep Dagoo’s memory alive.  Hugh was promoted to Sergeant in 2022.  After the passing of K9 Dagoo, Hugh  went on to complete a 9-week course in South Carolina where he trained and welcomed another K9 to his family. K9 Gabe became a member of the Sheriff’s Office in April 2023.

Hugh was a member of Boy Scout Troop 38 and earned the rank of Eagle Scout under the direction of Scoutmaster Rick Greenwood.  He was pinned by Fuzzy Ralston, who also gave his father, Hugh C. Tate, Sr. his pen in 1968.  The father/son team also had the opportunity to experience Boy Scout together at the Ft, Steuben Scout Reservation where Hugh obtained Logan in the Order of the Arrow.  While a Scout Hugh had the opportunity to attend two high adventure trips, Philmont National Scout Ranch in Cimarron New Mexico (2002) and the S E A base in the Florida Keys (2006).

He is a member of the Chester Volunteer Fire Department where he serves as treasurer.  He is also a member of the Fraternal Order of Policel

Hugh resides in New Cumberland with his wife, Jordan, and two children, Nikko and Demi.
