The only remaining part of the house of the late Mary Porter on Ridge Avenue is the stairway which appears to take you straight to Heaven. The house was demolished as part of New Cumberland’s ongoing effort to demolish houses beyond repair . Throughout town workers can also be refurbishing old homes and apartment buildings in preparation for appears to be a need for affordable housing. The house was previously owned by longtime New Cumberland school teacher Miss Mary Porter who taught Home Economics to many New Cumberland residents and her brother John Porter who worked on the river.
