COMMUNITY PULLS TOGETHER TO CLEAN UP AND MOVE BACK IN IN NEW CUMBERLAND

As the angry Ohio River receded under gray skies Saturday, those affected by the flood in New Cumberland began the task of of cleaning up the mud and debri left by the flood water and moving back into their homes and business. They were joined by volunteer organizations and friends who had come to their aid as the water came higher and quicker than anticipated.

A free luncheon is being held by the Family Resource Center at the current New Cumberland City Building for all workers and those affected by the flood. Police Chief Chickie Skinner said the entire community had pulled together with volunteer fireman working day and night to ensure everyone got to higher ground and were able to move their belongings. Aproximately 70 residents were impacted by the water which crested at 40.2 foot.

In one instance, Skinner said a couple from Pennsylvania had to be rescued from their car as they attempted to drive through flood water at the red light. With the assistance of several helpers and Pat Jones and bucket the couple was rescued from the car where the water was edging towards the roof.

Dumpsters donated by NC Sanitation are located behind the Fire Department for use. Skinner donations of cleaning supplies are coming for use in the clean-up. He reminded anyone involved in the flood recovery efforts to make sure they get a tetanus shot from the health department.
