AND THEN AGAIN……..by Tamara Pettit

I am writing words I never thought would hit  my pen or laptop.    I am a Democrat.  I think Unions saved lives and brought a living wage and humane working conditions to our people. I truly believe we are are our brothers/sisters’ keeper and we have a responsibility to see that no child goes hungry. More specifically I am a social liberal and fiscal conservative.  During my years in the legislature, it was often said that in the nineties  that in another State our brand of Democrats would be labeled Republican.   Senator Joe Manchin is a prime example of that breed.  Make no mistake,  my hatred of Donald Trump can only be described as visceral.  He stands for all things I find repugnant.    As a woman I cannot understand why any feminist could cast a vote for a man who so clearly objectifies the female gender.

……..But, after watching last week’s debate I cannot vote for the presumptive Democratic Presidential candidate Joe Biden.  It breaks my heart. Makes me incredibly sad.  But reality has to rule this decision, which is so important for our country.

…….I’ll admit that I had to turn off debate half way though because watching Joe Biden became painful to me.  My heart ached for him.  He was a mere shell of the robust, feisty candidate he once was.  His raspy voice could barely be heard, his eyes were flat and I didn’t see comprehension of the question in them.

…..This is a man who has remained in a position he should have stepped down from a year ago.  Is it because he refuses or is it his wife and staff who encourage this charade?   If it is, shame on them.

……Many of us remember sitting in shock as Pres. Lyndon Johnson announced he would not be a candidate, even if asked.  Lyndon knew he could not win.   History  clarifies that the condition of Woodrow Wilson who had a stroke was kept from the country by his wife.   The reality of the current situation mandates that the people closest to Biden convince him to step down now, with dignity and to allow his party time to choose another presidential candidate.   If he chooses to continue his current course, he will have doomed the very party he loves and destroyed his legacy of service.

……In hopes that is what happens, I have researched other Democratic candidates I could support.  Sen. Sherrod Brown from Ohio comes to mind.  Today’s POLITICO, an online political magazine you can access for free,  offers a run down of potential replacements. Take a look.

…..Americans do a lot of things wrong, but what I thing we do pretty good is face reality.   As much as it hurts, It’s time to face reality.   If the Democrats can’t change their candidate, they’ve lost my vote.  I know I can’t vote for the Republican  nominee, if it’s Trump.

…….So, in 2024 what am I?  I’m an American and I’m praying we get this mess worked out.!
