LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Recently while doing some family genealogy research I came across a treasure!

In Newell, West Virginia, in the basement of the old Newell High School is the Tri-State Genealogical Society!

The large room is filled with information about “our” ancestors!

In addition to having access to written history they have two computers for advanced research.

I was very lucky to be assisted by Eileen Collins who was patient, thoughtful and fun! I was a bit perplexed by a display of items for sale (garage sale) until I found out that the group pays $200.00 a month for rent and the proceeds from the sale of these items defrays the rental cost. This service is given to us free of charge. I made a donation.

Yes, you can look up heritage info on the computer, but you miss interacting with “people” and you have to wade through many steps to get where you want to go.

While we were there two other individuals came in to research their ancestors.

The Tri-State Genealogical Society is on the verge of closing! What a shame it would be to lose this service. I don’t know how to help keep it going. Do you?
