NEWELL FUN DAY “ALL WET”

Wild and wonderful West Virginia will  transform into Wet, Wild & Wonderful West Virginia on August 3 thanks to an idea brought to our State from a resident who relocated from Idaho.

Heather Culig who along with her husband , Matt Wicks, relocated to Newell from Boise, Idaho where Matt was the Regional Representative  in the West for Homer Laughlin.  Matt, now the COO of Fiesta Tableware  is a fifth generation member of the pottery/Wells’ family and is the grandson of Joe Wells Senior.  The parents of four grown sons and one grandchild, the family purchased the Joe Wells, Sr. home most recently owned by Basil Mangano.

“I love the mountains, the small town,” said Heather who said she looks forward to the children and grandchildren enjoying West Virginia.

Both Heather and Matt quickly integrated into the Newell Community. Heather said that last year the Newell Improvement Council, of which she is a member, had so much fun doing the Chester 4th of July Parade that they thought it would be great to do their own parade.

Heather remembered the “Splash Parade” which was an annual event where they resided in Idaho and she suggested Newell consider doing one.

Last year the first Splash Parade debuted  and had 26 floats entered.   Those on floats volleyed water guns at the onlookers while those along the route had the opportunity to purchase squirt guns for $2.  With water barrels to keep the squirt guns refilled the event was a smashing and soaking success.

This year’s parade is shaping up to be better than ever with a limit of 50 floats set.  The parade is only one feature of Newell’s Fun Day, a day packed with activities for every age.

“We are super excited and look forward to this being even more successful than last year,” said Heidi.
