HCEA ASKS BOARD OF EDUCATION FOR SUPPORT TO FIGHT PEIA INCREASES

Melanie Donofe, co-president of the Hancock County Education Association, addressed the Hancock County School Board to request their help by signing a resolution urging the State of WV to stabilize PEIA.

Donofe told the Board the proposed changes to PEIA are a 14 percent active employee and 12 percent retiree and non-medicare retireee premium increase. She said a 40 percent deductible and out-of-pocket max increase for employees and non-medicare retiree. Changes also include 100 percent prescription copay increase with a $203 spousal surcharge increase;

“These are jaw dropping increases, and will make health care unaffordable for many employees,” said Donofe who said a PEIA public hearing at the Highlands Event Center in Wheeling November 14 beginning ag 6 p.m. Registration to speak begins at 5:30 p.m.

In other business, the Board:

**Assigned Erinn Knipp as a countywide substitute teacher;

**Approved Emily Hores and Macey Gump for teaching in lieu of planning period;

**Assigned Tyler Warrick as Class ’27 sponsor and Kendahl Stanley as Key Club sponsor, both at Weir High;

**Approved a Leave of Absence for Tammy Shaw, custodian II at Oak Glen High;

**Assigned Robert Davis as Plumber II/GM at the Maintenance Dept.;

**Assigned Rebecca Cook as countywide substitute cook;

**Approved a request to take Weir High participating students students to Huntington for the 22nd Annual WV Recycle Fashion Show;

**Noted that the policy related to industrial hemp based products and marijuana and other controlled substances not defined as narcotics with modification will close November 4, 2024.
