New Cumberland City Council voted to raise the salaries of the Mayor and City Council members. Tjat will be accomplished by a change in the ordinance setting the pay rate and will require several readings of the ordinance and approval at each stageThe raises will go into effect in July after the new council is elected. The Mayor’s salary will be increased from $200-per-month to $400-per-month while Council members’ salaries will be increased from $100-per-month to $200-per-month. This marks the first time the Mayor and Council’s salary have been increased in 24 years.
Council heard from Alan Lee of the Swaney Memorial Library Board. The City previously contributed $1,000 per annum to the Library with that contribution made in July. Lee asked the Board to increase that annual contribution to $2,000-per-annum by making a $1,000 donation now. He noted that the Swaney Trust is dwindling and will run out in a few years. He said the Library Board is constantly looking for grants and most recently received a $3,500 grant. Council unanimously agreed to donate the additional $1,000 at this time.
