Makeup Days Added to School Calendar

The Hancock County Board of Education voted to revise the school calendar for the remainder of the school year at Monday night’s meeting. Superintendent Dan Enich had requested a waiver from the State for the days missed due to inclement weather and the water emergency in Weirton, but was denied. As a result the schedule will be altered to include the following: Thursday, 4/17 – will go from a full faculty senate day w/no students to an instructional day with a 2-hour early dismissal for faculty senate; Monday, 4/21 – will go from an out of calendar day to a full day of instruction; Wednesday, 6/4 – will go from an instructional day w/a 2-hour early dismissal for faculty senate to a full instructional day; Thursday, 6/5 – will be converted to the last day of instruction for students. This will be a 2-hour early dismissal for faculty senate; Friday, 6/6 – will be converted to the 200-day contract personnel’s last day.

The Board recognized Weir High’s partnership with Blue Stream Farms which was named a Regional Winner by the Education Alliance. Eight partnerships were winners out of 80 submitted. The Weir High partnership will receive a $2,000.00 Celebration Grant and will compete with the other seven winners for the State Partnership of the Year. The State winner will be named at the Education Summit on May 15, featuring actress Jennifer Garner, and will receive an award package valued at $25,000.00.

By participating in the sustainable agricultural business, Weir High students not only learned about plant biology, but also developed entrepreneurial skills, including marketing, sales and financial literacy.
