Governor Patrick Morrisey line-item vetoed 29 items in the budget presented to him by the Legislature. It appeared no department was safe from his veto pen as he took money away from both higher and public education. The WVU College of Law lost $250,000.00 bringing their budget to a zero because they failed to provide adequate back-up information to the Governor. An Advisory Council to a Military College sponsored by Majority Leader Pat McGeehan was stripped of funding. An LPN to BSN was also cut due to no supporting documentation. Morrisey noted that the language had been inserted into the budget causing him to reduce the $250,000.00 to zero.
Even the Ronald McDonald House which provides parents of children being treated at WVU a place to stay was cut from $5,000.00 to $2,000.00
Public Education was cut In many arenas most notably a Safe School program which had been funded at $7,443,900.00 was cut by $200,000.00. From the appropriation for Safe Schools, R3,100,000.00 shall be used for mapping. A computer science education program was cut by $600,000.00 and the Mountain State Digital Literacy program was cut by $300,000.00.
A Federal Funds grant match was reduced from $1,250,000.00 to $750,000.00. The Veterans Nursing Home’s budget was reduced by $187,650.00 bringing the amount to $11,255,525.00.
While the office of Tourism has been touted as an economic engine for the State, Morrisey cut their budget by $300,000.00 to $2,750,000.00
