Beth Morris, a language arts teacher at Oak Glen Middle School, was honored as Teacher of the Year at the Board of Education meeting Monday. Morris was selected from a field of eight nominees, one teacher from each school. Nominees included Jodi Cole, Title 1, New Manchester Elementary; Jennifer Smith, 3rd grade teacher at Allison Elementary School; Lesley Michaud, Spanish teacher at Oak Glen High; Sarah Howell, Kindergarten teacher at Weirton Elementary; Deanna Williams, Science teacher at Weir High; Thomas Williams, band and chorus director at Weir Middle; and Wendy DiAngelis, JDRIV.
The nominees were selected by their peers at their respective schools while the Teacher of the Year was selected from the 250 teachers in the Hancock County School system.
Superintendent Dan Enich said that the Hancock County School system has a 95% graduation rate and a 95% attendance rate with a $50 million budget. He said that the strength in a school system is in the teachers who dedicate their skills towards the education of its students.
As Hancock County’s Teacher of the Year, Morris will now travel to Charleston where she will vie among 55 county nominees for West Virginia Teacher of the Year.
