The Avenue of Flags in New Cumberland Cemetery is a sight to behold. The flags unfurled waving in the wind, each with a name of a veteran on the streets of the cemetery is a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought so we can be free.
The Avenue of Flags is in jeopardy this Memorial Day. According to Penny Sprouse, volunteers are needed to dig the holes for the flag post. Age and ill health have reduced the number of men who faithfully dug the holes and if new volunteers fail to step up the Avenue of Flags may not happen this year.
“We are asking for help on Saturday, on Saturday, May 24 @ 10 a.m. to dig the holes for the big flags for the New Cumberland Cemetery for Memorial Day, May 26 at 7 a.m.,” said Sprouse.
“We are sorry to say that if we can’t get any help we will not be putting any flags up this year. The VFW Adam Poe Post 3526 needs younger people to help them.”
If you can help, or if you know of someone who can help, please contact Sprouse. Honor these men and women with your support.
