Demolition for New Road in NC Delayed til Fall

New Cumberland residents anticipating the demolition of buildings which stand in the path of the new Route 2 through town will not see any action this summer. While City officials were told demolition would begin in Summer, Jamis Haspel, director of the Div of Highway in Hancock County, the work will not begin until Fall. The contractor, Triton, has two years from the start date to complete construction on the road. Haspel said prep work must done to get ready for demolition. The houses need inspected for asbestos which if discovered will mean asbestos removal must take place prior to demolition. The large tree which must be cut down. The tree has bats roosting in it and summer is their birthing season. Protected as an endangered specie, bats will not leave the tree until November..

Haspel said as the road work begins State inspectors will be on site to monitor Triton and any sub-contractors that company may hire.
