OGMS 5th Graders Honor Service Dogs and County K-9 Unit

Oak Glen Middle School verified that Hancock County’s Service Dogs are a kids best friend too. Mrs. Vanderham’s 5th graders recently showed their appreciation for our local heroes by presenting their service dog and the county K-9 unit with donated items to thank them for all they do for the school and the community.

The donations, provided through support from The Allstate Foundation, are part of a larger effort to encourage community service and student involvement in giving back. The students were proud to recognize the hard work, dedication and service of the K-9 teams who also keep our community safe every day.

Deputy Hugh Tate who heads the K-9 officers in Hancock Officers explained to the students that the County currently has four dogs and most recently acquired a blood hound. The dogs cost $20,000.00 each and are highly trained. The blood hound is often used to locate missing people, such as a family member with some form of dementia who may have wandered away. The deputies introduced the dogs and demonstrated their ability. Prior to ending the program the OGMS service dog, Meeka, paid a visit to the students working the crowd to get plenty of pets and love.

Oak Glen Middle School thanks the Allstate Foundation for supporting student-led community service projects and helping our students learn the importance of gratitude and civic responsibility.
