BEWARE……your phone, computer & sanity may be at risk!

We all think we’re immune from a thief who infiltrates your phone, bank account, credit cards, e-mails and access to Facebook.   How could someone do all this damage to you and your business?  We’ve all heard “crooks are stupid”, but Hometown News is here to tell you, some crooks apparently are pretty techno-savvy.

Cyber-crime  happened to Hometown News and Shannon as the administrator three weeks ago and we’re still trying to get access back.   It was the middle of the night when Shannon’s phone gave off a strange noise and when she looked at it, everything was gone.   Her contacts, her applications such as her ability to get into Facebook, e-mail, etc.   She does mobile banking and she was to find out that the thief had stolen $500.00 from her Venmo account.  (Which she was able to retrieve.)

She also could not get into Facebook and e-mail.  When we started this venture 11 years ago, I did the writing and Shannon did pretty much everything else.  She was the administrator of our e-mail, Facebook page etc.  She no longer could get into the any of those.    Our third partner and operations manager, Abbi Elliott, took swift action and replaced Shannon as the administrator.  That safeguarded the paper for now, but our thief (s) had only just begun.

Shannon called the New Cumberland Police and asked for a meeting to report the crime.  She and I subsequently felt pretty hopeless.

In the past three weeks, I have had to have my American Express card   changed and yet just yesterday three charges were denied as the thieves continue to try to access both our Hometown News e-mail and my personal e-mail.     Shannon can get into Facebook for a few moments, but is bumped out immediately leaving her unable to access our 5,000-member Facebook page and open it to share information.

We wonder, “why us”  and what does this person hope to achieve.   It’s chilling to have someone playing with your information, not knowing when they will  strike and what is their motive.

I’ve asked for a status update on the case from Chief Skinner and Patrolman Blankenship.   Why we have  secured the paper, Shannon’s access to Facebook is still not recovered and that means 5,000 readers are not getting information.

We promise we will get this solved.   No promises about our sanity, however.BEWARE……YOUR PHONE, COMPUTER AND SANITY MAY BE AT RISK!
