The Hancock County Commissioners took another step forward in handing off the operation of the Hancock County Animal Shelter to the Jefferson County Humane Society at Monday’s meeting. On a 3-0 vote, the Commission accepted and approved a Lease and Operating agreement for the Shelter. Jefferson had been the successful bidder when the Commissioners made the decision to cease operating the facility themselves and put the operations of the Gas Valley Shelter out for bid.
Commission President Eron Check said that on Friday, Oct. 31 at a time yet-to-be-determined, the Commission will formally turn over the operation of the Shelter. The initial lease will be an eight-month lease set to expire in June, 2026 to coincide with the beginning of the Commissions fiscal year.
In other business, the Commission:
**Tabled both a revision of the Parks & Recreation Bylaws and the appointment of Lois Thompson Rakowski to the Board;
**Approved a resolution to enter into a contractual agreement with the WV Courthouse Facilities to receive and administer funds;
**Changed Tom Volberg from Seasonal Temporary Part-Time Assistant Maintenance Technician;
**Approved advertising for a Deputy Assessor;
**Approved New Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department entering into a lease purchase agreement;
**Announced that the Parks and Recreation Board will sponsor a Fall Fest at the Gas Valley Road Complex on Sat. Oct. 25
