On Monday, the Business Development Corporation of the Northern Panhandle (BDC) unveiled its plan to renovate the former People’s Bank and convert the once-vacant building into the organization’s future headquarters.
The project marks the latest step in the BDC’s ongoing commitment to downtown revitalization. Last year, the organization took steps to demolish blighted downtown structures to make way for new investment. Now, the BDC is reinvesting directly into downtown development.
“This project isn’t just about relocating our offices – it’s about continuing our mission to catalyze investment in the two counties to attract jobs and increase the quality of life by directly investing in Brooke and Hancock counties,” said Anthony Clements, Executive Director of the BDC.
The BDC’s project reflects a broader resurgence in downtown Weirton with businesses and institutions such as Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, Guida Center, and Strip Steel Credit Union making major investments in downtown renovation.
“Downtown revitalization has been a key piece of my administration’s strategic plan,” said City of Weirton Mayor Dean Harris. “The People’s Bank, with its stately presence and central location at Cove and Main, was and can again be a central figure in Weirton’s business community. How appropriate is it that the BDC is renovating it!”
“Downtown Weirton has a growing energy,” Clements added. “It’s the collective effort of business owners, educators, and organizations like ours working together to make visible progress. We’re proud to
be part of that momentum.”
The renovation is being completed in partnership with the College of St. Joseph the Worker, whose students are performing much of the construction work. Clements emphasized that the project doubles as a workforce development initiative, providing hands-on experience to students preparing for careers in skilled trades.
“We’re able to transform an underused property into something vibrant again, while also giving local trainees the chance to develop skills that will serve them and the region for years to come.”
The project is expected to be complete in June 2026, with progress updates on the renovation to come.
