Joe Swan Receives Outstanding Mountaineer Award from WVU

New Cumberland native Joe Swan is one of ten WVU employees recognized with an “Outstanding Mountaineer” award. 2026 marks the inaugural recognition of employees deemed to go above and beyond in their service to the University. In 2025, Swan was the recipient of the Mountaineer Impact Award. He was nominated by Wren Baker, Vice President and Director of Athletics. From the ninety employees receiving Impact Awards, 10 were chosen as Outstanding Mountaineers.

Swan has served as Senior Director of Publications and Design at WVU since 2000. Prior to that time, he was employed by the National Association of Sports & PE in Reston, VA and the Blue & Gold News and Mountaineer Sports Network at WVU.

A 1989 graduate of Oak Glen High School, Swan received his BS in Public Relations & Journalism in 1993 and his MS in Sports Management from WVU in 1996. From 1993-1996, he was a student and Graduate Assistant.

Swan lives in Morgantown with his wife, Regan, and 4 children: Wil, Kelan, Alex and Ellison. He is the son of Lynn and the late Joe Swan and the grandson of the late Walter and Stella Sobel and Kurt and Helen Swan.
