Hancock Schools RIF-Transfer Process has Begun

Superintendent Walter Saunders has already visited two schools to deliver reduction-in-force or transfer letters to teachers and school service personnel. Hancock County is 143 personnel over the State formula resulting in a $10 million deficit in an already financially troubled school district.

Saunders delivers the letter personally to every individual affected by layoffs and transfers. He then says they go over the letter and issues such as insurance. The plan is to have all the letters delivered to the schools, main kitchen, transportation and maintenance by the end of day March 7.

In an effort to increase transparency for those affected by the layoffs, parents, students and the community the District has launched a “Ask a Question” section on the Hancock County Schools website. The site will have frequently asked questions answered and those visiting the website can submit a question.

“This is not a place for statements,” said Saunders.

The financial rescue bill has passed both the House and Senate and has currently been sent back to the House to see if it concurs with a Senate amendment to the bill.

Saunders said school employees and the community should thank the legislators, most especially lead sponsor of the bill 1st District Delegate Pat McGeehan for their work in getting bill passed.
