Shirley J. Carmichael of Chester peacefully passed away at her cherished home on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, surrounded by love after a courageous battle with illness.
Shirley was born in Wheeling on December 19, 1939, to the late John and Martha Bowers Schell. She was 86 years old.
She was a devoted homemaker whose greatest joy was nurturing her family. Shirley’s warmth and gentle spirit filled her home, and she delighted in creating beauty with her hands through sewing and crafting. Raised near West Liberty, she attended West Liberty High School, forming lifelong friendships and memories.
Two brothers, Alfred and John Schell, preceded her in death, along with her parents.
Left to treasure her memory are her beloved husband, Ronald Carmichael, with whom she shared a devoted marriage since March 27, 1965. She lives on in the hearts of her children, Dana Remias of Clay, WV, Ronald Carmichael of Harmony, NC, and Robert Carmichael of Harmony, NC; her dear sister, Sandra Miller; and her adored grandchildren, Stephanie, Elizabeth, and Natalie Remias. Shirley’s legacy is the love she instilled in each of them.
Shirley’s family is honoring her wishes and not holding services. She is in the compassionate care of the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester, WV.
