MCKAY NAMED LIONS SCHOLAR FOR FEBRUARY

Maddie McKay, 17, daughter of Tony and Rachel Wright-McKay of Chester, is the February recipient of the Lion’s Club Scholar of the Month.

A senior at Oak Glen High School, Maddie carries a 4.0 GPA and is involved in many sports, clubs, and extracurricular activities. She is a four-year letter winner in soccer, basketball, and softball. Maddie is also a 4-year member of the OVAC All-Academic Team.

In soccer, Maddie is a 4-time OVAC Champion, 4-time Sectional Champion, 3-time Regional Champion, and has made 3 State Tournament appearances. In 2019, her team was WV AA State Runners-Up. In 2021, Maddie was selected as Most Valuable Player by her coaches and elected Captain her Junior & Senior years.

In basketball, Maddie has started every game since her freshman year and served as Captain of the 2021-22 team. Maddie has led her team in assists every year and earned 2021 OVAC 1st Team honors and 2020 OVAC 2nd Team honors.

In softball, Maddie holds the record for strikeouts her freshman year, totaling 500 strike-outs in 2 years. In 2021, Maddie led her team to an undefeated 23-0 regular season, OVAC Championship, Section Championship, Regional Championship, and WV AA State Runners-Up.  Maddie was named 2021 OVAC 4A Player of the Year, 2021 Captain of the Wheeling Intelligencer Team, and garnered 1st Team All State and All-Tournament Team honors in 2021.  As a freshman in 2019, Maddie was selected Team MVP and made 2nd Team All State.  

Maddie is a member of the National Honors Society, Prom Committee, Pep Club, and Key Club. She was voted on the Prom Court her junior year. In 2018, Maddie won the West Virginia Golden Horseshoe Award. Maddie also enjoys volunteering her time at the Hancock County Animal Shelter and helping young girls with the Oak Glen Jr. Bears softball program.

After graduation, Maddie will continue her academic and athletic career with a scholarship to study Speech-Language Pathology and play D1 softball at the University of Toledo.
