HANCOCK BOARD OF EDUCATION HEARS TEST SCORES

      The Hancock County School Board heard good news about students’ testing results in West Virginia’s  General Summative Assessment at Monday’s meeting.    Curriculum Director Andrea Dulaney shared the scores of elementary and middle schools in reading/language arts, math and science. Proficiency scores compared the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years with  all but one showing increased performance.

      “I’m proud of how we did,” said Dulaney who reported every parent will be able to view the scores on the Board’s website.

       Among West Virginia’s 380 elementary schools, Allison Elementary was rated 19; New Manchester – 15 and Weirton Elementary – 23rd.    Among the State’s 151 middle schools, Oak Glen Middle was rated 9th and Weir Middle was rated 12.  With 113 high schools in the State, Oak Glen rated 27, a drop of 12 points; Weir High rated 33, a decrease of 43 points.

       Individual school scores are:

     READING/LANGUAGE ARTS:  Allison Elementary 3rd – 45% to 48%; 4th – 49% to 62%; New Manchester 3rd 50% to 67%, 4th – 62% to 63%; Weirton Elementary 3rd – 45%  to 45%; 4th, 39% to 36% OAK GLEN MIDDLE:  5TH TO 6TH 38% TO 43%; 6TH to 7th 48% to 54%; 7th to 8th 47% to 48%;  WEIR MIDDLE- 5TH TO 6TH 27% to 46%; 6th to 7th – 36% to 43%; 7th to 8th 42% to 34%.

     MATH: Allison Elementary 3rd 61% to 74%; New Manchester 3rd -52% to 82%; 4th 60% to 63%; Weirton Elementary:  3rd 54% to 58%; 4th 40% to 46%; Oak Glen Middle: 5th to 6th – 35% to 63%, 6th to 7th – 39% to 50%, 7th to 8th -36% to 60%;  Weir Middle:  5th to 6th 23% to 30%; 6th to 7th  18% to 38%, 7th to 8th 33% to 37%

    Science:  Oak Glen Middle increasing from 19% to 47% and Weir Middle from 28% to 29% for 3,4,5th grade standards.  In 5,7and 8th grade standardsOGMS  fom 34 to 44 while WMS went from 27% to 28%.

In other business, the Board:

**Accepted the resignations of Joseph Farran, Science teacher, OGMS; Douglas Wagstaff, school nurse, OGMS; Eric Hayden, countywide substitute teacher; and Marquis Campbell, Multi-Categorical/Autism, Weirton Elementary;

**Approved Luci Growe, Brooke Fox, Jay Williams and Clinton Holley as countywide substitute teachers and Danielle Porter as Math teacher, Weir High;

**Teachers approved for teaching in lieu of planning period were Matt Kopp, Music, Weir Middle; Richard Nixon, ECCAT, Oak Glen High;

**Resignations were accepted for Adam Davis, Assistant Girls’ Basketball, Oak Glen Middle, and Rance Everly, Head Boys’ Track, Oak Glen High;

**Scott Wiley was approved Head Girls’ Basketball Coach, Oak Glen Middle;

**Richard Antol, Jr. was approved as a Substitute Bus Operator;

**Transfer was approved for Beverly Merica from Substitute Aide, countywide, to Supervisory Aide II/III/IV, Transportation Dept, Bus 183 to fill a leave of absence;

**A resignation was approved for Alicia Railing as a Supervisory Aide, New Manchester Elementary.  Railing is retiring;

**A resignation was approved for Tracey Hukill as countywide substitute aide;

**Set the next regular meeting for Sept. 26 at 6:30 p.m. at JDRIV Career Center.
