Sydney Brown, 17, is the October recipient of the Lion’s Club Scholar of the Month. Sydney is
the daughter of David and Sheryl Brown of Chester. A senior at Oak Glen High School, Sydney
currently holds a 4.118 GPA and is ranked 3rd in her class. Sydney will earn twenty credit hours
as an early entrance student taking dual credit courses through West Virginia Northern
Community College. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Prom
Committee, and Pep Club and has served as Class President for three years. Sydney was also
selected to represent the junior class as a 2022 Junior Prom Court member. During her
sophomore year, she was chosen to represent Oak Glen in the Weirton Chamber of Commerce
Youth Leadership Program. As a senior, she was a West Virginia Rhododendron Girls State
Participant. Sydney has always sought volunteer opportunities, including community
beautification projects, assisting at middle and elementary school functions, volunteering at the
Hancock County Animal Shelter, and helping the youth softball organization and camps.
Sydney is a four-year letterman on the softball and basketball teams and a three-year letterman
on the soccer team. Sydney was a member of the softball team during their 2021 undefeated
regular season, the 2021-22 back-to-back Ohio Valley Athletic Conference (OVAC)
Championship Teams, and the 2021-2022 State Qualifier and the 2021 Runner-up in the West
Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) Softball State Finals. She has
been named in succession to the OVAC All-Conference Softball Second Team and as a
WVSSAC Softball Honorable Mention during her sophomore and junior years. Sydney was also
chosen for the Wheeling Intelligencer All-Ohio Valley Softball Team First Team in her junior year.
As a soccer team member, she was part of the 2019 WVSSAC Soccer State Runner-up Team
and the 2021 and, most recently, the 2022 WVSSAC Soccer State Qualifier Teams. She has
also been a member of the 2019, 2021, and 2022 Ohio Valley Athletic Conference (OVAC)
Championship Teams and was chosen to participate in the 2022 OVAC All-Star Game.
After graduation, Sydney plans to attend Slippery Rock University to pursue a degree as a
Physician Assistant and play softball.
