AND THEN AGAIN…….by Tamara Pettit

…….While the turnout was great for the FORM Energy openhouse with lots of handouts, there were a lot of people unable to attend. So I am going to inundate readers with timelines on construction, etc. The most important segment of that information is where, when, how and what type of jobs are going to be included in the 753 jobs to be created. Thinking ahead to acquire the necessary training for employees would also be information that prospective job seekers need. The Board of Education meets tomorrow night and I’m curious if meetings are planned with FORM and the Rockefeller Career Center or if FORM will do their own in- house training.

…….We all have fears, some are rational; some are not. I am a pretty confident person, but not confident to climb on a two-wheel bike and trust I have the balance to keep it afloat. I am one of the few people who cannot ride a bike……or swim. Both considered basic skills that an overprotective mother nixed very early on. As I watch the sports for girls I marvel at how things have changed. I have read that girls’ participation in sports prepares them for the business world in how to play as a team and how to be competitive. It’s also a proven fact girls who participate in sports feel their own power and are much less likely to be involved in an abusive relationships as an adult.

……..I’m so disappointed that West Liberty is dropping tennis as a collegiate sport. I predict more colleges will be doing the same with other low participation/low revenue sports.

……Since Bill’s death I’ve navigated all the tasks that had to be done by making lists and prioritizing issues. Side by side my list and dates things need to be accomplished are the normal household maintenance things I don’t want to forget to do. The one thing I want to do, really need to do, I get paralyzed every time I start to work on it…….trade the Mercedes in for a more practical SUV. I’ve decided the Mercedes SL has to many bells and whistles for me to figure out and I just want a simple car for a simple driver. Salesmen see me coming and sense when I get a deer in the headlight look when they wax eloquent about all the offerings. The Mercedes had two screens in the backseat so your passengers could watch a program or play games. The only person who rides in my back seat is Max the Dog. I try to make Shannon ride back there but she can’t figure out the games.

……I will clearly admit it’s a gender thing and I get flummoxed by talk of horsepower and add ons. You go to websites and they tell you to build your car. That’s the car companies’ job. My job is to give you money for the car. Beyond that we have no relationship. To date I’ve visited three and 1/2 car dealerships. I bit the bullet yesterday and made an appointment to look at a Forrester suv and showed up at the nissan dealership asking for my salesman. They very nicely told me that was a subaru and sent me on the way down the road. I think the process, which can be as long as two to three hours needs to be broken down into segments. After an hour sitting in those little cubicles I begin to hyperventilate because they want to extract all the information from you before even looking a the car.. What do I require in a car. A seat thats low enough that I don’t have to jump when I get in the car; a radio that I don’t have to have an engineering degree to get music; a backseat that is a bench so Max the Dog is most comfortable (no I don’t anticipate ever having other passengers) and all wheel drive that will allow me to be mobile. Thanks for telling me about the horsepower, I don’t have any idea what that means. The best part on this search was when the salesmen didn’t come with me on the test drive. Decisions not yet, but getting closer.

…..I smell the prettiest purple flower in a bush near the patio. I think it’s freezia and it reminds me of flowers my Gramma Barton used to have. They only bloom and smell for about a week so I’m determined to slow down enough to smell them. With two little girls, aged 2 and 2 months, now in the family. I got a new patio set so Abbi’s growing family could be accommodated. Max was in Heaven with a little girl to play with and I was struck by the way life goes on and what we may not think twice about today are the memories we are making for years to come Shannon who has taken on the grandma name of Mimi remembered that she and her brother always rolled down the hill so she wasn’t satisfied until she saw two-year old Madelyn give it a try.

……My Mom’s generation didn’t fool around with namby pamby threats when she watched her seven grandchildren. She knew what the seven of them were capable of and scared the heck out of them if there was something she didn’t want to do. While I was gently telling Shannon and Doug not to go down where there was a strip mind behind the house because who knew what contaminants were in the ground, my Mom went for the jugular. The kids weren’t allowed beyond the pine trees that line the back border of the property and , Shannon said that Gramma said that it was the end of the world and you could never go past there cause cowboys and Indians were there to get you. Mom didn’t take the time to reason with a child she just made up a scary lie and stuck with it. It evidently worked cause none of the grandchildren admit to venturing beyond the trees.

……With news of Chester and New Cumberland getting additional funding from video lottery, I think citizens should consider what they think the funds should be used for and present them to the respective Council.

…….I think the Hancock County Health Department is a great addition to upper town in New Cumberland. Their new electronic sign really brings home all the health department has to offer and I would venture to say will increase the number of residents utilizing the services.

…….The J.M. Bradley used appliance store appeared to be doing a bustling business in New Cumberland Friday. It’s a new business and the owners are I believe related to Jim Bradley who owned the apartments near the river.
