AND THEN AGAIN……..by Tamara Pettit

FLOOD…..It’s Sunday and the sun is shining and I’m sitting looking out my window in Veteran’s Blvd. and a flood seems a million miles away.

But, on Friday morning when I drove down to my late sister’s house to check where the water was the flood was very much a reality.  I stood at the corner of Pearl and Chester and took a picture for the paper I rembered floods past.  The water crested at 40.2 about a foot higher than the 39 feet it was supposed to crest.   It also came quicker.

,,,,,,I am also reminded of Mr, Roger’s quote “When bad things happen,,,,,look for the helpers.  There will always be helpers.”

…..And that what you see in a flood, people who are moving their belonging to safer grounds, pulling their furnaces or hot water tanks.  Hauling out their trailers.  And then there are the helpers.  Those who may live on higher ground and not have a worry, but show up to help.  Mayor Will White said the New Cumberland volunteer fireman worked throughout the night moving families and other community members.

……Chief Chickie Skinner and others along with Pat Jones and the bucket truck had to pull a real life rescue Friday as an elderly couple from PA attempted to drive though the water at the red light.  Facebook pictures showed a little red car with water almost up to the roof.  Chickie said they waded (in waders) to the car; extricated the couple where Pat Jones and the bucket truck  lifted them to safety.  Chickie said when they got to safety the man looked up and said “I’m an idiot!”   Well, maybe so or just someone not used to flood water.

…….In my late sister and brother-in-laws house we found a cabinet where a laminated page with all the flood levels and whose house or business needs to be moved.  Mayor White tells  me City Clerk Tammy Jenkins has an even more detailed list then that.

….If there is a message I think unaffected townspeople send to those affected by the flood might be it’s “we got your back.”   Sally Greathouse tells me the Lions Club helped hand out cleaning supplies on Saturday and Sunday to free the Firemen to pump basements,

……As far back as records were kept, there have 24 floods in New Cumberland    The worst was of course, the 1936 flood, where not only did the water reach 2nd floors. Ironically,  I was going through old photos my sister had from my Dad Sunday and I came across photos of the 36 flood in different locations that the Independent had had made into postcards which they must have sold.  Trying to darken so I can show you, but they’ve lightened with time.  Doors of the building were forced open by water and 3,000 cases of beer went out with the tide…..Harry Sprague’s garage in upper town  moved it’s location  from the David Ward property and landed on the railroad downtown near Ira Donovan.

……. My Mom grew up on the corner of Pearl and Chester in the Spilecki house and she remembered the water being up to the second floor she remembered sitting on the roof waiting to be rescued by board and watching chickens float by.   I guess a lot of people in upper town kept chickens.

……A mystery?  OK, if there’s anyone out there who can help   solve this get in touch.  There are five close up pictures of my Dad circa 1960s  I was always told they appeared across the top of a story on the West Virginia Crime Commission in the Charleston Daily Mail.   They clearly ran cause the reduction are still on the back..   It’s Dad from various angles answering questions before a committee.    That’s a lot of newspaper space so it must have been a story of statewide implication.   I think I was about 13 when it happened and I remembered hushed talk about it between my Mom and Dad.  I’m intrigued and want to know more.  I can’t image what a small town Justice of the Peace in Hancock County had to tell the Crime Commission.  Anybody have any idea, please give me a call at 304-564-7154 or e-mail me at [email protected]
