DEMOCRATIC WOMEN PLAN ACTIVITIES

.The Hancock County Democratic Executive Committee held their monthly meeting July 18, 2023 at B4 Burgers in Weirton.        Chairman Kathy Link called the meeting to order, welcoming those in attendance, taking silent attendance and leading the Pledge Of Allegiance. The  secretary’s report was read and approved, as well as the treasurer’s report which will be filed for audit. The picnic shelter for August 12th was cancelled.  Our plans to have a back-to-school event didn’t allow enough time to get the advertising and mailers out to the local democrats.  The officials tabled this event to allow for planning during the winter months and have an early summer event next year.         The Executive Committee along with Brooke and Weirton women participated in the parades.  The first of July in Weirton and Community Days in Follansbee on the fourteenth of July..  Those who participated were Anna Gillespie, State President; Kathy Gillespie and Elsie Pompa from 

Brooke County Democratic Women.  Those who participated from Weirton were  Teresa McCombs. President of Hancock County Democratic Women; Pam Allison, Treasurer; Alesia Brodgon, Membership Chairman; and Kathy Link, Chairman of the Executive Committee.  Officials are considering a better plan to participate in the Christmas Parades.

          The Executive Committee welcomed Alex Risovich to their meeting and invited him to be an associate member of the democratic women.  Attorney Risovich shared insight and information regarding future Candidates for Hancock County. 

           They discussed a fundDraiser for the Executive Committee, and one of the members suggested that they add a Quincy Wilson signed football to their fall football basket fundraiser.  Very exciting .  One of the members suggested that they have wine, WVU and Steeler items in the basket.  They will make final plans for a fall football and wine basket fundraiser during the next meeting…

            Chairman Link will call Gurrera’s Office to find out about the Democratic Headquarters.

             Chairman Link will ask Tiffany Gale to speak at their next meeting, after checking out the size of their headquarters.

             They discussed possible Candidates for next year.  State Chair, Mike Putin advised that they submit names of Candidates by September 15th.  He has a website for Candidate training and resources.

              The place to start with Candidates is City Council incumbents and former Candidates.

               Two names were discussed to run for Commissioner or Delegate.

               As the meeting was adjourned , it was noted that the next meeting will be held at 5:00 P.M. on August 15th at B4 in Weirton.

              Following the Executive Committee meeting at 6:15 P.M., the Hancock County Democratic Women assembled for their monthly meeting.  President Teresa McCombs called the meeting to order and welcomed those in attendance.

              Silent attendance was taken.  The secretary’s and treasurer’s report were read and approved.  The treasurer’s report will be filed for audit.

               A Nominating Committee was selected for officers next year.  The Nominating Committee consists of Marianne Turkal, Alesia Brogdon, Kathy Link, Dina Carnes and Pam Allison.

               The 59th Annual Democratic Women’s Meeting is scheduled for September 15th to 17th at Undo’s, Weirton.  Registration forms were passed out for all attending the annual meeting,  The $65.00 registration fee is due by August 31, 2023.  President McCombs sold raffle tickets for the Quilt Raffle to be held at the Annual Meeting.  

                 Hancock County Democratic Women decided to do a raffle basket for the auction at the Annual Meeting.  The theme of the basket is “FIESTA WARE, EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING FIESTA WARE.  One of the members advised that she would call Homer Laughlin, Chester.  Further information will be forthcoming at the August meeting.  A half page ad was submitted along with the money due to the Hancock County Federation of Democratic Women for the Annual Meeting Program.  The Hancock County Democratic Women donated Fifty Dollars $50.00 to Brooke County Democratic Women to defray the costs of the hospitality room at the annual meeting.

               Six  new members attended the meeting, all were welcomed and got caught up on Hancock County Democratic Women issues.

               A  new headquarters for HCDemocratic Women and the HCExecutive Committee was discussed with more information to follow.

              The guest speaker Tara Shepherd was welcomed.  She is the Director of the Community Bread Basket in Weirton, phone number (304) 748-7595, located at Pennsylvania Ave., Rear, Weirton.  The HCDW are trying to secure donations of female hygiene products for the Bread Basket, and are also trying to set up a volunteer schedule.

               As the meeting was adjourned, it was noted that the next meeting will be held at 6:15 P.M. on August 15th at B4 Burgers in Weirton.

               The HCDW welcomes new members.  If you are a Democratic woman or plan to register as a Democrat and reside in Hancock County, you are invited to attend one of our monthly meetings on the third Tuesday at B4 Burgers, 1801 Penna. Avenue, Weirton.  You can also attend if you have not registered to vote yet.  We would really enjoy meeting you if you are 18 years old or older.  Annual dues of $10.00 are payable after joining.
