Energy Express, the award-winning literacy program by West Virginia University Extension, is making a comeback for the summer of 2024 to provide reading, STEM, and nutrition education to children throughout West Virginia. Currently, the program is actively seeking individuals to contribute to its Hancock County site in Weirton, WV.AmeriCorps members are crucial to serving as community coordinators and caring mentors for children participating in the program. Volunteers will commit to six weeks during the summer, from June 17 to July 26, with additional time allocated for training and program setup prior to its commencement. Training sessions are scheduled for June 5 and 6 at WVU Jackson’s Mill in Weston, WV.Energy Express thrives on community involvement, with youths, AmeriCorps members, and other volunteers collaborating with site supervisors to create a meaningful experience for children entering first through sixth grade, especially in rural and low-income communities.Beyond the personal rewards of volunteering, AmeriCorps members receive valuable benefits, including an education award, living allowance, and service hours. College students serving as mentors are eligible for a $1,459.26 educational award, a $3,726.00 living allowance, and 300 service hours.To be eligible for AmeriCorps volunteer service, individuals must be at least 18 years old by June 9, 2024.
