PROS. ATTORNEY JOE BARKI IS CANDIDATE FOR 1ST CIRCUIT JUDGE

I am a life long resident of the northern panhandle, having grown up in Brooke County and residing in Ohio County for the last 21 years.  I have been married for 26 years to my wife, Dr. Kelly Barki, and have 3 children, Abby, 20, Joe 18, and Eva 14.
After more than 24 years in public service as a WV State Trooper and subsequently as a prosecuting attorney in Hancock, Brooke and Ohio counties, I have decided to run for Circuit Court Judge because I believe that after 42 years it’s time for the status quo to change. I believe things must be better in our justice system, and that requires a change that brings a modern conservative approach to the bench that reflects our current, common sense, community standards…an approach that is the polar opposite of the philosophies being pushed in big cities across this country, not one that brings us closer to the dysfunction of those communities. My philosophy will provide a fair, consistent application of West Virginia law, based upon my experience and working knowledge of the criminal justice system, having worked with victims and addressing defendants on a daily basis, and that will ensure also that the punishment fits the crime and that people are held accountable for their actions.
I am committed to the protection of an individual’s constitutional rights, and to a responsive criminal, civil and abuse and neglect docket where prompt decisions are handed down on legal issues, hearings are held in an expedited manner, and where trial dates are set.  Justice delayed is justice denied.  I will advocate for, not block, the re-starting of the regular rotation of circuit court judges, so that each community gets the opportunity to see and experience the judicial philosophy of each circuit court judge.  My commitment to running for circuit judge has been endorsed by groups from all areas including the West Virginia Troopers Association, The West Virginia Sheriff’s Association, The West Virginia Republican Party, the UMWA, the Teamsters Union and many others.  These groups, like me, believe it’s time for a change and that my conservative values and judicial philosophy is the right direction for the first circuit.
