BOARD OF EDUCATION APPROVES PLACEMENT OF $10,650,000 LEVY ON BALLOT.

The Hancock County Board of Education unanimously approved a School Bond Levy. The $10,650,000 Levy now goes to the Hancock County Commission Thursday, for placement on the November ballot. Superintendent Dan Enich said that the cost to a homeowner with a $100,000.00 home with an assessed value of $60,000.00 would be $3.43 per month (approximately $45 per annum)

A majority of the items in the levy are related to school safety, a top priority for Superintendent Dan Enich, who remembers eight years ago when he was principal of Weir High and a locker search revealed a 35 mm handgun.

“It was an eye opener for me,” said Enich who stressed that the safety of the schools is a driving factor.

Hancock County must also bear the burden of the pyrite remediation at Oak Glen Middle School. The County was able to obtain a $975,000.00 Federal Grant to assist with the cost, but a local match of $870,000.00 must be obtained and is included in the Levy.

The Levy will have a duration of 10.5 years. The bond issue would be in June, 2025 at a 6% rate at 10.5 years.

In other business, the Board approved Casey Arnott as Director of Facilities & Maintenance and Mary Cline as a part-time Nurse Facilitator.
