The Hancock County Health Department expanded the focus of its awareness event from breast cancer to all types of cancer and held a walk to support those fighting cancer and to honor those who have passed from the dreaded disease. The participants ranged in age from a baby who rode in a wagon to adults who have watched their family and friends fight cancer.
One participant said her family was walking in honor of her Aunt Joanne, who fought breast cancer and after five years was declared cancer free only to find she had bone cancer two years later, The event included pumpkin painting for the youngsters; dispersion of printed material with information about early detection in various types of cancer; and awards of prizes donated by local businesses.
The Health Department offers a variety of services to the county which include immunizations, testing for diseases like STS and HIV, inspection of area food services, and threat preparedness.
