Garden to Pantry Fundraiser Returns

The original Garden to Pantry Fundraiser is Back. The Hancock County Community Educational Outreach Service is happy to announce the return of their unique, hands-on, food preparation classes, Garden to Pantry.

Led by trained CEOS volunteers Sue Isner and Becky Wiegers, each class will involve participants in every aspect of food preservation, from prep to final product. “We feel the hands-on approach is more beneficial than just watching a class,” says Wiegers. “I sat in on several instructional classes but, although I understood the process, it wasn’t until I had actually done it that I truly realized it was something I could do.”

“Food preservation is more than just canning,” added Isner. “We are not only teaching two methods of canning (pressure and waterbath) but, also, freezing and dehydration.”

Class size is limited to eight so that each participant can prepare, jar, and process their produce and take the final product home with them. Participants will also receive the “Successful Home Canning” booklet from the West Virginia Department of Agriculture which includes recipes for canning fruits, vegetables, meats, and more.

Classes will be held at 4-H Camp Aura, 147 Camp Aura Lane, New Cumberland on. the following dates: Jams & Jellies, June 5; Waterbath & Pressure Canning, June 19; Freezing & Dehydration, July 10. All classes will be from 5-8 pm. Each class costs $15, with payment due two weeks prior to the class. Those who preregister for all three classes will receive a ten-dollar discount.

Checks should be made payable to the Newview CEOS and mailed to Becky Wiegers, Treasurer, 59 Aberdeen Road, Chester, WV 26034. For questions or further information, call Sue Isner (304) 670-3699 or Becky Wiegers (330) 368-8515.he original Garden to Pantry Fundraiser is Back.
