Memorial Day

As crazy as this country may seem, remembering those military men and women who gave their all so that the United States of America would continue, sometimes stumble, sometimes fall, but always rise again. Honoring those men and woman first began on May 30, 1868 and was first known as Decoration Day because the main activity was to decorate the graves of fallen veterans, Commander in Chief John Logan of the Grand Order of the Republic, a fraternal organization who honored Union Soldiers.

Many local observations took place to honor deceased veterans. The National Cemetery Association, a division of the Veterans Affairs’ office credit Mary Ann Williams of the Ladies Memorial of Columbus, Ohio with making the holiday for all deceased veterans. In 1968, Memorial Day was declared a Federal Holiday on the last Monday in May.

New Cumberland VFW 3526 has cancelled the Avenue of Flags at the Cemetery due to the inclement weather expected. The ceremony will be held at the VFW Post at 10 a.m. and at the Cemetery at 11 a.m. A Memorial Day parade will be held with a music at the VFW post to follow.
