Board of Education Hears Update on Pyrite Remediation at Oak Glen Middle.

The Hancock County School Board met June 23 for its regular meeting at Oak Glen High School. Chris Arnott provided the Board with an update on the remediation work Oak Glen Middle is undergoing due to an issue with pyrite. Arnott said the work is ongoing and a demolition crew of 6 to 7 workers will begin work on the locker room next week. They are currently removing the lockers.

The presence of pyrite in the middle school has caused the building to sink causing the foundation to sink and creating an unsafe situation for students and making that section of the building unusable..

In response to questions, Arnott told the Board that the project is insured. Funding for the project is being provided by the $987,000.00 from the School Building Authority and $800,000.00 by the most recent School Bond Levy.

Approval of a variety of salary schedules for classified and professionals was tabled and will be taken up at the next meeting.

The Board heard from Kelvin Elmore who advocated for Justin Horstman for the position of head basketball coach at Weir High.

The Board went into an executive session to discuss the Superintendent’s evaluation and the selection of a head basketball coat at Weir High.

Upon going back into session, the Board voted to accept the Superintendent’s evaluation saying that Superintendent Dan Enich had exceeded expectations.

The Board approved T.J. Haught as Head Basketball Coach at Weir High on a 4-0 vote. Board member Jim Horstman recused himself from voting as his son Justin was a candidate for the position.
