John Dale Herbert, 96, died peacefully Wednesday, December 23, 2020.
He was resident of Stone Pear Pavilion in Chester and formerly lived in the Hancock House, New Cumberland. He was born August 30, 1924 at Seebert, Pocohontas County, WV. A son of Frank and Leota Canfield Herbert of Elkins, WV.
John graduated from Elkins High School in 1943. He retired at 30 years from National Steel Corporation in Weirton, WV as a Motor Inspector in 1981.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Rita Ruth Collett Herbert in 2009. His parents, two brothers, Frank Herbert, Jr. and Henry Clay Herbert and his sister Mary Hope White.
He is survived by his three children, John Herbert Jr., Karen (Leroy Cheuvront) Cunningham, Linda Riley all of New Cumberland, WV; his grandson Greg Brown of Weirton, WV and a great granddaughter. He was blessed by a large group of nieces, nephews and others who considered him family.
John was a lifetime and charter member of the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department, member of the National Rifle Association and member of the Weirton Steel 25 year Club. He was a carpenter, electrician and avid gardener sharing with his friends and neighbors on Wylie Ridge and Chapman Road.
The family would like to thank the staff of Stone Pear Pavilion and Valley Hospice for their care and support during this difficult time.
Our father deserves a beautiful tribute to his life. However, we appreciate that visiting with friends and relatives may not be in their best health interest at this time. We certainly understand and ask that you be with us in prayer.
