AND THEN AGAIN………………..by Tamara Pettit

…..The hardest part of being an elected official is to know when it’s time to go. Holding onto power and the elective office you hold is ingrained in most politicians and the higher the position, the harder to let go. Although we all know there was no other decision for Joe Biden than to announce he’s not a candidate for re-election, I felt sad when I heard the news. Watching dementia take it’s toll on Pres. Biden, was painful, but I can only imagine the pain of ending a career in this manner must’ve been like for Biden.

……Just because Biden endorsed Vice-President Kamala Harris doesn’t mean she’s going to be the Democratic nominee. An open convention could mean that with enough signatures on a petition another candidate could put herself/himself in the running. One reason Harris was such an compelling choice for Biden as his VP, is that she was from California and could bring so many votes to the table. Gov. Gavin Newsome from California, however, has been mentioned as a Presidential candidate.

……..THE VOICE! The timbre of a voice is critical when determining if you like a candidate (just my opinion). You may agree with the message or tune the message out because of the voice that delivers that message. Kamala Harris does not have a good voice in my opinion. It has a nasal quality that makes it grating when she is sending a strong message. Think back. Ronald Reagan had a great voice. Barack Obama’s voice advanced his career tremendously. Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio is a compelling candidate, but his voice is raspy and I think that detracts from his message. In reading about John Kennedy, I read where his voice was a detriment when he ran for Senate. His voice was described as “thin and reedy,” and his campaign went to work on improving both voice and delivery.

……..An item in METRO NEWS on Friday said that Gov. Justice was going to make an announcement regarding $50 million coming from the Office of Economic Development for Hancock County involving NUCOR. Try as I could, I couldn’t track down what that announcement involved. I assume the Governor is making the announcement in Charleston, but then again he could be coming to Hancock County. Who knows? Somebody does, but it’s not me. I do understand the reticence of any of the offices to cross the Governor by stealing his thunder. I would imagine you only steal Jim Justice’s thunder once.

……..Unless you’re Babydog. An article in POLITICO evaluated who was a “hit” and who was a “miss” in the way they were dressed at the Republican convention. The consensus was that Babydog was the biggest hit in his conservative khaki and white coat and was wrinkled just enough to be appealing.

…….If there was anything positive to come out of the past few months, I think the many more voters have become familiar with the process used to select our presidential candidates than ever.
