HISTORIC VICTORY – Oak Glen’s Football Team celebrated its Homecoming with a 61-21 victory over Brooke High School. Erin Skinner, daughter of Lester (Chickie) Skinner and Angie Patterson, was crowned Homecoming Queen during halftime festivities.
With COVID wreaking havoc on the team’s ability to schedule opponents, Oak Glen Head Football Coach Ted Arneault has scheduled the AA Oak Glen team against AAA opponents.
“We wanted to add AAA teams to challenge us this year and Brooke is one of the four of them added to our schedule this year” said Arneault. “It was the first time since 1970 we had beat them, and our record up to this point was 1-22 against them historically. So this was only the 2nd time we have beaten them and for the first time in 50 years.”
Last football season saw communities in Northern Hancock rooting for the Golden Bears as they pursued the State title. This year, the fans are still rooting, but the opportunity to attend the games has been limited due to COVID.
“We miss the fans for sure, but we are also are very happy to have a chance to play. Some teams downstate have only played one or two games so far,” said Arneault. “We are in a good position to qualify for a high playoff seed if we can continue to win, we are hoping to earn some home playoff games.”
Oak Glen will face Weir High in an away game on Friday, Oct. 16. Their remaining schedule includes Spring Hills (Oct. 24, 1 p.m.); Frankfort (Oct. 30 – home) and Phillip Barbour (Nov. 6.)
